You see my Support Needs, but do you see my independence?

Following Learning Disability Week 2026, we caught up with Tom, who visits our Top Valley hub, to hear about his experiences and the importance of being seen for who he is, beyond assumptions and stereotypes.

People with learning disabilities are often defined by the support they need, but support is only one part of the story. Behind it are individuals with ambitions, talents, independence, and the determination to live life on their own terms. Tom's story highlights why it is so important to look beyond labels, recognise people's strengths, and encourage opportunities that help them thrive.

In this Q&A, Tom shares his thoughts on independence, the challenges of overcoming misconceptions, and why taking chances and trying new things can open doors to confidence, growth, and achievement. His message is a powerful reminder that while you may see someone's support needs, it's just as important to see their independence too.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

A: “Well, my name’s Tom, I’m quite sporty and I like musicals. I like to go to musical shows  and also I like my military.  I went to see the Edinburgh Tattoo – it’s 75th Anniversary, and that was wicked! I used to live with my mum and dad, until I decided to move out”

Q: Tell us about your decision to move out.

A: “Well… it took really ages to get all of my stuff from my mum’s house all the way up to Supported Living.  The Staff there are nice, they are on like 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  They change shifts.”

Q: How did you feel about making that move?

A: “Not devastated, but a bit frightened.  But… no more sleeping at home – Yay!!”

Q: What challenges did you face when settling into your new home?

A: “Starting a new regime.  Trying to find where everything is”

Q: How would you describe the way you communicate with people?

A: “Well sometimes I’m a bit serious or, in a nice way, sometimes I like to nudge people or tap on their shoulder to try and get communication or sometimes I write a little note and pass them the note and communicate that way”

Q: What advice would you give to other people with a learning disability who want to become more independent?

A: “Choose the right level and just go on and you’ll achieve it”
